{"id":4530,"date":"2021-01-31T09:09:40","date_gmt":"2021-01-31T09:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arquidiocesisdelahabana.org\/address-january-31-2021\/"},"modified":"2024-03-16T04:05:02","modified_gmt":"2024-03-16T04:05:02","slug":"address-january-31-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arquidiocesisdelahabana.org\/en\/address-january-31-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Allocution January 31, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-4530-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/arquidiocesisdelahabana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Domingo-31-de-enero-lite.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/arquidiocesisdelahabana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Domingo-31-de-enero-lite.mp3\">https:\/\/arquidiocesisdelahabana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Domingo-31-de-enero-lite.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Today, January 31, the fourth Sunday of Liturgical Ordinary Time and the feast of Saint John Bosco, this biblical text from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark, chapter 1, verses 21 to 28, is heard in all the Catholic churches of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>(Song)<\/p>\n<p>Father Junior Antonio, parish priest of Nueva Paz, tells us this biblical text:<\/p>\n<p>If in the Gospel of Saint Mark last Sunday we witnessed the beginning of Jesus&#8217; preaching with the announcement that time had come and the kingdom of God was near, today the strength of that Kingdom comes to us that here and now. It is manifested in the good news of full salvation offered by Jesus Christ. The Lord presents himself to us as the Messiah, the Teacher, the Prophet who speaks on behalf of God to humanity. He himself said: \u201cUntil John all the prophets and the law were prophecy\u201d (Mt 11:13). Of all this, He is the fulfillment. The Kingdom of God that Jesus announced has already arrived: it is Himself, and it is manifested, above all, by the word that He proclaims to the people from God.<\/p>\n<p>If Moses promised a prophet for the future who would preach in the name of God, now we can say that he has already arrived. He is the new and definitive Moses, He is the incarnate word of the Father who has entered our land to give in this world, also through us, fruits of new life. \u201cI have come so that they may have life and have it abundantly,\u201d said the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus perfectly fulfills what God announced about the future prophet, which we read in the first reading from Deuteronomy: \u201cI will put my words in his mouth and he will tell them what I command him.\u201d How many times did Jesus say, especially according to the gospel of John, that what he taught was what he had heard from the Father! He is the living Word that God addresses to humanity.<\/p>\n<p>And, what is that word of life from God on this Sunday?: that the powers of evil do not have the last word, that God always makes his way and leads us along the path of life that he is and humbly manifests in his walk with us, at our side, entering all our realities to revitalize them. What is the good news of the Savior, what liberation does it bring us? liberation from evil, from sin, from death: He has come to set us free, with the freedom of the children of God, to free us from all the unclean spirits that steal our hope, joy, that enclose and bury life . For this reason, the Pope again and again invites us not to let hope be stolen from us.<\/p>\n<p>The Lord also revealed it: \u201cI am the way, the truth and the life.\u201d Today the evangelist Saint Mark presents to us Jesus freeing a man who was possessed by an &#8220;unclean spirit.&#8221; Everyone is &#8220;stunned&#8221; before the miraculous power of Jesus; so it is not to be expected that &#8220;his fame immediately spread everywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Kingdom of God among us that Jesus established is not only a new word, a teaching different from those of the teachers of the law, but his incarnate Word that reveals a powerful force that fights against evil and defeats it, it is therefore, life-giving, saving word, divine word with a human face: Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus preaches the kingdom with \u201cdeeds,\u201d that is, with words of authority. Fight against the alienating and oppressive power of the evil one. It does not remain in the religious sphere, but encompasses all dimensions of the human being. With his activity he wants no one to be marginalized because they are ignorant, because they are possessed. It welcomes and humanizes everyone by facing their demons so that they begin to know themselves and feel like people.<\/p>\n<p>It is significant that the first miracle that Mark narrates is precisely the liberation of a possessed man: the victory against the forces of evil.<\/p>\n<p>In the Bible we notice the tendency to interpret all evil as a consequence of sin or the influence of the evil one, that is, the devil. But the gospel sometimes distinguishes very well what is illness and what is diabolical possession, as in the dialogue established in today&#8217;s passage between &#8220;the spirit&#8221; that tormented that poor man and Jesus, &#8220;the Holy One of God.&#8221; &#8220;. Jesus treats a &#8220;sick&#8221; person differently than a &#8220;possessed&#8221; person.<\/p>\n<p>But whatever that &#8220;spirit&#8221; of evil may be, the Gospel assures us that Jesus comes as &#8220;the strongest&#8221; and sets out to defeat these forces of evil. He does so, not following the formulas and spells of the exorcists of the time, but with a blunt order: &#8220;shut up and get out of him&#8221;, also this &#8220;with authority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What surprises the inhabitants of Capernaum most is that he &#8220;teaches with authority&#8221;, not like the other teachers and scribes. He speaks with conviction and freedom regarding the rabbinic schools of the time. Furthermore, his word is accompanied by prodigious works.<\/p>\n<p>Today, so eager for good news, for a breath, for new life in the face of widespread death, in the face of the suspicion of others, in the face of fanaticism, Jesus bursts in, He is always new, He is the permanent newness of the Father who in the Spirit renews us. This is what the Pope remembered, particularly to young people in his apostolic exhortation Christus vivit, the Pope says:<\/p>\n<p>Christ lives, our hope, and He is the most beautiful youth in this world. Everything He touches becomes young, becomes new, becomes full of life.<\/p>\n<p>He is in you, He is with you and He never leaves. No matter how far you go, the Risen One is there, calling you and waiting for you to start again. When you feel aged by sadness, resentments, fears, doubts or failures, He will be there to give you back your strength and hope. End of quote.<\/p>\n<p>As Christians of God&#8217;s people, we participate in the prophetic mission of Christ. On the day of our Baptism the priest anointed us by praying: \u201cAlmighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has freed you from sin and given new life through water and the Spirit, consecrate you with the chrism of salvation, so that you may enter to be part of his people and be forever members of Christ priest, prophet and king.\u201d To which each baptized person, or their family, responded \u201cAmen.\u201d This amen committed us forever to the Lord and the Church that we formed, we must transmit the voice of God to others, just as the bishops of Latin America in Aparecida asked us when they exhorted us to look at our reality as missionary disciples of Jesus Christ so that in May our people have life.<\/p>\n<p>And particularly to us, Cubans, 23 years ago, when Saint John Paul II visited us, he invited us: The works of evangelization that are taking place in various environments, such as missions in neighborhoods and churches, must be cared for and peoples must be cared for<\/p>\n<p>But first, the true prophet must humbly listen to God. Because we do not preach to ourselves, but to God. If Jesus spoke &#8220;with authority&#8221; it is because he spoke from God, with whom he remained in perfect harmony.<\/p>\n<p>We should all be in some way &#8220;exorcists&#8221;, that is, liberators. Because evil continues to exist, whatever it is called: those forces that act inside each person continue and lead them to do what they should not do. We are not asked to perform miracles, but we are asked to fight against evil in ourselves and to also help others free themselves from all &#8220;possession&#8221; that could enslave them.<\/p>\n<p>With our timely word and above all with our attitude of closeness, do we free someone from their evils? Do we communicate hope to those who come to us? Can we help you overcome the demons of pessimism, or worldly criteria, or more or less ingrained habits? Can we help you be freer internally?<\/p>\n<p>We can ask, with sincerity, every time we pray the Lord&#8217;s Prayer, for ourselves and for the whole world, what Jesus taught us: \u201cdeliver us from evil&#8221;, which can also be translated &#8220;deliver us from the evil one&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>With the incarnation of the Son of God, the fullness of time has arrived and the promise made of a new prophet like Moses has been fulfilled: Jesus is the new Moses. He brings a new teaching and authority, which is not claimed, but earned with what Pope Francis calls true power, that is, service.<\/p>\n<p>The fame of Jesus Christ crosses the centuries and the Spirit of the Risen Lord blesses tomorrow because \u201chis throne will remain forever\u201d, \u201chis kingdom will have no end\u201d and \u201cthe forces of evil will never prevail\u201d. The Church is founded on this faith, as Monsignor Adolfo said in the ENEC: \u201cWe have hope and we want to give words of hope to those who ask for them, to those who need them, to those who have set their sights only on earthly things as a limit. to their human aspirations and feel as if something is missing. We do not have the first or the last word for everything, but we believe that there is a first and a last word for everything and we hope in the One who has it, the Lord. In Him we look with serene confidence at the always uncertain future, because we know that tomorrow, before the sun rises, the providence of God will have risen over Cuba and over the entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Song)<\/p>\n<p>Today the Church also celebrates the feast of Saint John Bosco. Many people studied in the schools of the Salesian fathers and Salesian nuns. These people remember the teachings of Don Bosco. He said to his sons and daughters:<\/p>\n<p>Without familiarity love cannot be demonstrated, and without this demonstration there can be no trust. Whoever wants to be loved needs to show that they love. Jesus Christ became small with the little ones and bore our weaknesses. Behold the master of familiarity.<\/p>\n<p>The teacher who is seen alone in the classroom is a teacher and nothing more, but if he goes to recess with the young people, he becomes like a brother. He who knows he is loved, loves, and he who is loved has everything, especially the young. This trust establishes an electric current between the young and the old.<\/p>\n<p>Hearts open and make their needs known and manifest their defects. This love makes parents and teachers bear the fatigue, the annoyances, the ingratitude, the hindrances, the shortcomings, the negligence of young people.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus Christ did not break the broken reed nor quench the wavering flax, He is our model.<\/p>\n<p>Taken from the Letter of Rome.<\/p>\n<p>Many parents think that their children are hopeless. Many people say that young people are hopeless, but Don Bosco never got tired and the example of a frog can help us continue our teaching to those we love:<\/p>\n<p>On a popular holiday, a curious contest was organized. A gift was placed on top of a very high pole that had been smeared with oil to make the climb more difficult; those who tried to reach the top would slip and fall to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>More than fifty frogs signed up for the contest, as the prize consisted of a bag full of succulent mosquitoes that the winner would eat.<\/p>\n<p>Amidst the screams and music, the frogs began to rise. Little by little, some of them slipped and fell to the ground. There were fewer and fewer left. The public told them to stop trying, that it was very difficult. Get down now! They are going to fall and hurt, and the higher they go the worse it will be!<\/p>\n<p>Most of the frogs, between the fatigue and discouragement that those screams caused them, decided to return to the ground, only a few remained&#8230; And the screams continued. Get down at once! They can&#8217;t get there! Saddened, one of the two remaining frogs returned to the ground. Little by little, the only one who remained on the pole managed to reach the top of this pole and, with a smiling face, ate all the mosquitoes in the box.<\/p>\n<p>When she returned to the ground, the journalists who had come to interview her were very surprised to see that she did not answer their questions. Then they realized she was deaf.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with the difficulties that others propose to us to teach young people, let us become deaf and continue our teaching in the style of Don Bosco.<\/p>\n<p>When they told me that what I wanted to do was impossible it was too late, I had just finished.<\/p>\n<p>(Song)<\/p>\n<p>The Pope, after the Angelus prayer last Sunday, said:<\/p>\n<p>One of the great gifts of our time is the rediscovery of Holy Scripture in the life of the Church, at all levels. The Bible has never been so accessible to everyone as it is today: in all languages \u200b\u200band now also in audiovisual and digital formats. Saint Jerome, of whom I recently remembered the 16th centenary of his death, says that he who ignores Scripture ignores Christ. And vice versa, it is Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, dead and resurrected, who opens our minds to the understanding of the Scriptures. This happens especially in the Liturgy, but also when we pray alone or in groups, especially with the Gospel and the Psalms.<\/p>\n<p>I thank the parishes and encourage them in their constant effort to educate in listening to the Word of God. May we never lack the joy of sowing the Gospel! And I repeat again: let&#8217;s get into the habit, get into the habit of always carrying a small Gospel in your pocket, in your bag, so that you can read it during the day, at least three or four verses. The Gospel always with us.<\/p>\n<p>(Song)<\/p>\n<p>God, good Father, who created us with health and prepared us to maintain it, bless us with health of soul and body. Lord Jesus Christ, who healed so many sick people: deliver us from every type of epidemic. Give charity, mercy and patience to those who care for the sick.<\/p>\n<p>Holy Spirit, enlighten the Health personnel so that they find the remedy for this disease and thus can make all people happy.<\/p>\n<p>Saint Mary of Charity, accompany your sick children so that they never lack the closeness of family, church and society.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed Father Olallo Vald\u00e9s, who faced so many diseases and epidemics, pray for all of us so that, healthy and sick, we may be one heart and one soul. Amen.<\/p>\n<p>And the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit descend on all the sick, on us, on our families and remain forever.
