Homily of S.E.R. Cardinal Juan de la Caridad Garc\u00eda, Archbishop of Havana<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On a day like today, on a morning similar to this one, Juan de Rojas Manrique, his family, neighbors, friends, participated in the mass with which they celebrated the founding of this city on November 16, 1519, in this same place, below of a ceiba<\/p>\n

Like us today, they asked God for forgiveness for the evils committed and for the good not accomplished. They listened to the Word of God, which is not only history but also a message, and they set out to make it a reality and put it into practice.<\/p>\n

They manifested with words the faith that they already lived and showed publicly with their deeds.<\/p>\n

They prayed to Saint Christopher, the convert, the one who left the devil out of his life, the one who did the charity of crossing people on his shoulders from one bank to the other of the mighty river, the one who realized one day that he was carrying Christ. He believed that it was only once, but in reality every time he did it with the most humble, he carried Christ on his shoulders, just as He himself said: \u201cWhatever they do to others, they do it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

They offered the bread and wine that would become the Body and Blood of Christ and that they later received as spiritual food and offered the sacrifice of the Cross of Christ, which is present in each mass for the living, the sick and the dead. They thanked God, received the blessing and returned home to love each other more as a family, church and city.<\/p>\n

Today we do the same as our founders 500 years ago. We ask forgiveness for not having achieved personal, family, ecclesiastical and social peace and we promise to establish it with prayer, testimony and teaching.<\/p>\n

We are listening to the Word of God, light for our steps, a Word that we want to live and teach to our families in our own homes. Family that prays together, stays together.<\/p>\n

We are proclaiming our faith in the Creator God, in the Son of God the Savior, in the Sanctifying Holy Spirit God. We have already proclaimed it publicly in our jobs and study centers.<\/p>\n

We pray, like 500 years ago to Saint Christopher for fathers, mothers, children, grandchildren, relatives, friends, neighbors and people who suffer and we offer the salvation of Christ for them, the best we can do for those we love living, sick and deceased.<\/p>\n

Like Juan de Rojas Manrique and those present at that mass, we received the Body of Christ, strength for the path of life, medicine for sin, identification with Christ, food of eternal life.<\/p>\n

Our founders were Catholics, they publicly manifested their faith, they prayed as a family, they served their neighbors, for them everything with God, nothing without God, and they did very well and felt happy for this way of life.<\/p>\n

We all want the happiness of our children.<\/p>\n

The Christ of Havana, who blesses sailors and the city, tells us the Way, the Truth and the Life.<\/p>\n

Let us announce his gospel and great happiness will be present in the whole family and throughout Havana and we will enjoy deep peace, which is the best gift from Saint Christopher that we can receive in these 500 years, since we all want to eat in peace, work in peace, live in peace and die in peace.
