And throughout the centuries and today, our Church continues to go to all places, no matter how difficult, announcing, teaching, baptizing, celebrating the sacraments and practicing works of charity.

On this Sunday, October 18, we congratulate all the Ad gentes missionaries, all the priests, deacons, nuns, seminarians, lay people, who, coming from their lands, are present in our parishes and Archdiocese of Havana.

Write a letter of gratitude and congratulations to the priests, nuns, deacons, seminarians, who have come from their countries to share the Christian faith with us.

(Song)

On the occasion of this Missionary Day, Pope Francis sends us a message:

“In the sacrifice of the cross, where the mission of Jesus is fulfilled, God reveals that his love is for each and every one of us and asks us for our personal availability to be sent, because He is Love in a perennial movement of mission, always coming out of himself to give life. For love of men, God the Father sent his Son Jesus. Jesus is the Missionary of the Father: his Person and his work are in total obedience to the will of the Father. In turn, Jesus, crucified and resurrected for us, attracts us in his movement of love; with his own Spirit, who animates the Church, makes us disciples of Christ and sends us on mission to the world and to all peoples.

Mission is a free and conscious response to God’s call, but we can perceive it only when we live a personal relationship of love with the living Jesus in his Church. Let us ask ourselves: Are we ready to receive the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, to hear the call to mission, both in the path of marriage, consecrated virginity or ordained priesthood, as well as in ordinary everyday life? Are we willing to be sent anywhere to bear witness to our faith in God, the merciful Father, to proclaim the Gospel of salvation of Jesus Christ, to share the divine life of the Holy Spirit in the building of the Church? Are we ready, like Mary, Mother of Jesus, to put ourselves at the service of God’s will without conditions? This inner availability is very important to be able to respond to God: “Here I am, Lord, send me.” And all this not in the abstract, but in the present day of the Church and history.

Celebrating World Mission Day also means reaffirming how prayer, reflection, and the material help of your offerings are opportunities to actively participate in the mission of Jesus in his Church. Charity, which is expressed in the collection of the liturgical celebrations of the third Sunday of October, aims to support the missionary task carried out in my name by the Pontifical Mission Societies, to address the spiritual and material needs of the peoples and communities. churches of the entire world and for the salvation of all.” Pope Francisco.

(The DOMUND collection from Cuba will be sent to Cape Verde and Mozambique in order to evangelize).

(Song)

Saint Antonio María Claret, Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, tells us one of his missionary experiences.

“I wanted to go by land to the city of Baracoa, since I had no proposal by sea; I went with my fellow priests. A servant came with us, who brought the food, because the places were lonely, and the people from the few houses that were in those lands had been absent due to cholera. Well, that good servant began to fall behind, because the beast could not walk, and we arrived very late, at night, to a house where we found nothing but a soldier’s cookie, small and very hard, of which we made four pieces, one for each priest, and the next day, fasting, we had to undertake the worst path I have ever walked in my life.

We had to cross the river called Jojó thirty-five times, because, as it runs between two high mountains and there is no other place, when it passes through one part it does not pass through another. After the river we had to climb the high mountains, called Cuchillas de Baracoa, whose name is perfectly appropriate, since they are truly like blades. And above the cut or crest the path runs, and when one passes there, there are stretches in which a sea snail sounds, so that he who goes does not encounter he who comes; Otherwise, one or the other’s horse would have to roll down, because the passage is so narrow that a horse has no room to turn back. And those mountains are so high that you can see the sea from both sides of the Island, since they are in the middle of the Island, and they are also so long that they last four leagues. Well, after crossing the river, we had to go up those mountains and walk on an empty stomach, and when we went down they were so steep that I slipped and fell twice, although I didn’t hurt myself much, thank God.

At noon we arrived at a country house, where we could eat, and in the afternoon we happily arrived at the city of Baracoa, at the point where, upon reaching the island of Cuba, the discoverer Columbus set foot; The cross he planted when he arrived is still preserved. Well, this city had not been visited by any bishop for sixty years, and, therefore, the sacrament of Confirmation had not been administered. When I arrived, two of my priests had already done the holy Mission; However, I preached every day that I stayed there, I administered the sacrament of Confirmation to everyone, I visited it and went to the Parish of Guantánamo, and also to that of Mayarí. These two parishes had been missioned by my fellow priests, and I did the same as in Baracoa.

From Mayarí we passed to Santiago, the capital, forty leagues distant. Since the road is very lonely, we had to take supplies to eat. We leave on Holy Monday. We took a cod stew with chickpeas and potatoes in a clay pot. After having walked a long way, our companions said that we should eat. We stopped, they took out the pot, lit a fire, and, to shelter from the wind, they leaned against the trunk of a large mahogany tree. We all went for firewood; and the heat of the fire was so great that the pot broke. We got a yagua, of which there are many in that forest (yaguas are large leaves that fall from palm trees, like sheep skins), and we put the stew in a yagua because the pot had broken as a result of the too much heat of the fire; We found ourselves without a spoon or fork, and we took some güiras, and with that we ate our ranch or stew. We were thirsty, and to drink we took another yagua, and, tied at the ends, we formed a bucket and filled it with water and thus we drank very freely. We were all so happy and so happy, it was wonderful. The next day we arrived in Santiago to celebrate Holy Week, which I always celebrated every year.

According to Palladio Currius, 73,447 communions were celebrated, 97,070 confirmations. 8,577 cohabiting marriages were celebrated and 210 divorced couples managed to unite.

(Song)

We as baptized people must also announce the gospel, but on this occasion not in Baracoa, nor in Africa, nor in other continents. Our mission is to make the gospel present in our home. Your husband’s best missionary is your wife, your wife’s best missionary is your husband. The best missionary of your children is the father and also the mother. The best missionaries of dad and mom are their children. We pray for those who live in our house.

We read them the gospel. The gospel 2020 and 2021, which is already in our churches, is of great help to us. We pray for the people to whom we want to bring the gospel. We place these people in the hands of the Virgin and pray together.

God save you, Mary…

And may the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit descend upon you, upon those who dwell in the house, upon those whom you love, and remain forever. Amen.

(Song)

Today, the Third Sunday of October, the Church celebrates Domund, which means: World Mission Sunday.
