In fact, next Sunday, March 28, Holy Week begins, the most important for Christians, since in it we make the annual commemoration of the fundamental mysteries of our faith: the Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Father Ariel Su\u00e1rez J\u00e1uregui, parish priest of the Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Caridad church and Minor Basilica, gives us a comment on today&#8217;s liturgy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Father Ariel Su\u00e1rez:<\/strong> Before God we ask forgiveness for our sins, for the evil we did or thought, for the poor testimony of faith that we have given to others and for the good that we failed to do. We say: \u201cYou who love us so much, Lord, have mercy. You who have given your life for us, Christ have mercy. You who invite us to live in love, Lord have mercy.<\/p>\n<p>The Gospel that is proclaimed today in all the Catholic churches of the world prepares our hearts to properly celebrate Holy Week and to live as authentic Christians during all the weeks of the year; It is taken from chapter 12 of Saint John, verses 20 to 33, we listen to it carefully:<\/p>\n<p>(GOSPEL)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Father Ariel Su\u00e1rez:<\/strong> Allow me to comment on three points from the Gospel that we have just heard. First point, \u201cwe want to see Jesus.\u201d This phrase appears in today&#8217;s Gospel in the mouths of some Greeks who have come to Jerusalem for the Jewish holidays of Passover. They are not of the Jewish people, who were the people chosen by God in the Old Testament to make himself known to all peoples, but they are sympathizers of the Jewish religion, of the spirituality and morals of the Jews, which they recognize as higher and superior compared to other towns. They have entered the temple esplanade, and at a certain point they reach a place where there are thirteen columns with an inscription in Greek that prohibits non-Jews from entering, even with the threat of death for those who fail to comply with that rule. Therefore, it was a way of saying to the pagans, to those who did not belong to the Jewish people: \u201cyou cannot enter the holy place, the most holy place, you are prohibited from accessing the most intimate and profound part of God.\u201d \u201d. But these Greeks of our Gospel, who represent us, have somehow discovered that the true holy place, the true temple of God, the true sphere in which men discover who and how God is, is the person of Jesus. . Hence they express a deep desire: \u201cwe want to see Jesus.\u201d That means: \u201conly by seeing Jesus do we see God, we enter the realm of God, the sanctuary; Only by seeing Jesus do we discover the true face of God, God&#8217;s way of being, his style, his way of being present in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today we also honestly ask ourselves: \u201cDo I want to see Jesus? How do I want to see it? Because seeing a person is linked to the relationship we want or have with them. Can we have and be content with a superficial seeing, or can we want a deep seeing? Let&#8217;s take an example. Let&#8217;s imagine ourselves in a square and we see a young man walking towards us. We are all seeing him, but for most he is a stranger walking. On the other hand, if the young man&#8217;s mother, wife or girlfriend is next to us, when he approaches, she sees much more than what we see. She sees a unique, special, dearly loved person, someone who has changed her life.<\/p>\n<p>The Christian, if he wants to be such, must have this desire to see Jesus. See him as a unique, special person, the most loved, the one who can radically change our lives and make it a full and happy life. This is also what we express today: \u201cwe want to see Jesus, we want to see him like this, in his intimacy and depth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(SINGING)<\/p>\n<p>Second point: \u201cthe hour of Jesus.\u201d We are surprised by Jesus&#8217; answer to the Greeks&#8217; question. Anyone would have expected something like: \u201cbring them here or let&#8217;s go see them since they want to meet me.\u201d Instead, Jesus begins by talking about his hour and says, \u201cthe hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.\u201d At the wedding at Cana, John, chapter 2, Jesus tells his mother that his hour has not come, and in another moment of the same gospel, John, chapter 7, we are told that they tried to take him prisoner, but no one put his hand on him. hands on top because his time had not yet come. Jesus&#8217; time finally arrives in Holy Week. It is the time of his delivery of the cross. And why does he say that it is time to be glorified? How can one speak of glory when one contemplates a crucified person? Were not rather glorious the moments when many followed Him, applauded Him, He performed miracles and everyone spoke well of Him? No, that is worldly glory, the glory of the world to which men aspire when they are worldly. The glory of God is when Jesus can truly show who God is and God is love. When Jesus can show how much he loves God, that is the glorious moment. The glory of God is when He shows how much God loves humanity. Jesus has been revealing that love of God throughout his life, but now, in his offering of life on the cross, he brings that love to its fullness, without the possibility of misinterpretation or ambiguity. And, then, it truly responds to the desire of the Greeks and of us. God is only seen, God is only known in depth when we are reached by his infinite love of the cross.<\/p>\n<p>(SINGING)<\/p>\n<p>Third point: \u201cthe image of the grain of wheat.\u201d Jesus, like a good pedagogue, delves into the explanation of his time with a comparison: \u201cif the grain of wheat fallen to the ground does not die, it does not produce fruit and remains alone, but if it dies and it is an apparent death, it produces much.\u201d fruit. This image tells us what happens with a seed, when it is placed in the ground it disappears, it seems to die, but in reality it makes the fullness of life explode. Jesus, with the image of the grain of wheat, has given us a synthesis of his life, his death and his resurrection, but at the same time, he offers us that same life to be our life, the life of his followers and friends, the life of a Christian. In fact, he proposes it to us with disconcerting and paradoxical language. He who loves himself is lost, and he who hates himself in this world will be saved for eternal life.<\/p>\n<p>We must confess that when we hear these words it is difficult for us to understand them. Why does loving oneself seem to be condemned, and why are we asked to hate ourselves in order to enter into full life? What does the Lord mean? Jesus tells us that those who seek only and exclusively their own \u201cbeing well\u201d selfishly, instead of doing good, ruin their lives. Isn&#8217;t that the experience of so many marriages that end in divorce or friendships that end in enmity because the selfish \u201cI\u201d with its whims and demands has not been renounced? On the other hand, he who is capable of renouncing things, even legitimate or desirable, for a greater love of others, discovers with Jesus a more human and full way of living, and if not, let us all remember our good parents. How many times did they get up at dawn to attend to our crying baby, and how many times did they deprive themselves of the little piece of chicken or steak to give it to us, and of so many other things that only God knows to make our lives healthier and happier. We thank God for them.<\/p>\n<p>Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe was a Polish Capuchin friar, who asked to take the place in the concentration camp of a father who had been sentenced to death. He, like Christ, gave his life for that man, renounced himself and found life with a capital letter. Saint Teresa of Calcutta, also renouncing comforts and a pleasant life, including the customs of her people, Albania, became a citizen of India, decided to live poor among the poor and give her life to the service of the poor, sharing with them the love, closeness and tenderness. The saints are those who in history have shown the authentic face of Christ, the face of God; and in doing so, they have given the world light, joy and life.<\/p>\n<p>You and I know many people like this, parents, husbands, grandparents, children and grandchildren who lovingly take care of the rest of the family and their neighbors. We know bishops, priests, doctors, nuns, nurses, teachers, men and women of all professions and ages, who try with God&#8217;s help to love and do good. Every person who loves his neighbor, who hates a selfish life and seeks to donate and share love, lets us see Jesus, shows him to us, allows us to know him in depth. Will you and I also be willing to let others see Christ in our lives? That would be the greatest fruit of a good Holy Week.<\/p>\n<p>(SINGING)<\/p>\n<p>Let us now pray for our people and for the entire world. For the end of the pandemic, for the scientists who fight to find a remedy for it, for the vaccination programs in Cuba and the world. Let us pray for the rulers to seek the common good and peace and justice. Let us pray for married couples, that they may be faithful to their love for each other, and for those who are expecting a child, that he may be born healthy and bring joy to the home. Let us pray for the sick, the imprisoned, the suffering and those who are far from their homeland. Let us pray that we do not get tired of loving, that all Cubans always treat each other with love and respect. We do it together with the Lord&#8217;s prayer.<\/p>\n<p>(Our Father Prayer)<\/p>\n<p>Now we make spiritual communion\u2026<\/p>\n<p>(SINGING)<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday, March 19, with the feast of Saint Joseph, patron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis inaugurated a year of the family. May the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph protect, bless and protect all families in Cuba and the world.
