At a wedding the wine is missing. In the midst of this reality, lack appears and, apparently, God is not there. But a woman full of faith, full of hope, will intercede for that need. A mother who calls her son aside and makes a request. This is how I imagine Mary tenderly calling that son to make a request; and who can resist the request of a mother, delicate, feminine, attentive… who does not lose the role of mother. The one who one day said to her son: son, where were you?, never lost that maternal relationship. He was present before a need. She also wants to put before the need of those young couples, who did not want to make fools of themselves and appear in front of people that they were in need. Mary intercedes, declines, and makes a way for the hour of God to pass through her, also to pass through that family environment. And she knows how to give herself her place, because she experiences the love of God… and it is the love of God that she wants to be lived in that family environment.

(SINGING)

His Holiness, Pope Francis reminds us that weddings are a special moment in the lives of many, so that the most veterans, parents, grandparents… have an opportunity to reap the fruit of the sowing. “It gives joy to see your children grow up and make their home. It is the opportunity to see for a moment that everything you have fought for was worth it. Accompany the children, support them, stimulate them so that they can encourage themselves to build their lives, form their families. It is a great challenge for parents, in turn, the joy of young spouses. A whole future that begins. Everything has the flavor of a new house, of hope. At weddings, the past that we inherited and the future that awaits us always come together. There is a memory and hope, the opportunity always opens to be grateful for everything that allowed us to reach today with the same love that we have received. Jesus begins his public life precisely at a wedding. It is introduced into that story of sowing and harvesting, of dreams and searches, of efforts and commitments, of arduous work, which plowed the earth so that it would bear fruit. Jesus begins his life within a family, within a home, and it is precisely within our homes where He continually continues to introduce Himself. He is still a part; He likes to get involved in the family. It is interesting to observe how Jesus also manifests himself at meals and dinners. Eating with different people, visiting different houses was a privileged place for Jesus to make God’s project known. He goes to the house of his friends Martha and Mary, but he is not selective, he does not care if they are publicans or sinners, like Zacchaeus. Not only did He act like this, but when he sent his disciples to announce the Good News of the Kingdom of God, he told them. ‘Stay in the house where they receive it, eat and drink from what they have.’ Weddings, home visits, dinners… these moments will have something special in people’s lives so that Jesus chooses to manifest himself there.”

(SINGING)

Marriage is the best image to symbolize God’s relationship with his people. Precisely because this relationship is not perfect, because we all know that in married life we go from enthusiasm to fatigue, because there are good, bad, happy, sad moments; There are lies, there are deceptions. Marriage also reflects that relationship of God with Israel. We all know how the people of Israel have behaved for centuries and millennia, since God chose them, since God noticed them. And that is why the evangelist John has no other better comparison to relate that intimacy of love between God and the people of Israel than a wedding, than a marriage. For the evangelist, the presence of Jesus symbolizes at this wedding a definitive relationship between God and the people of Israel. A new stage opens, a new beginning, a fidelity that has to be firm. New stages in love will open with the presence of Jesus. The banquet in which Jesus is present is also to demonstrate that being in the ways of God and living in the presence of God is a banquet for the follower of Jesus; It has to be a joy and a constant discovery of happiness in the things you do for love of the kingdom, as Jesus discovered. That is why the evangelist does not like to put much emphasis on miracles, but on signs. To underline that symbolic aspect that Jesus brings in that relationship with God, which is the wedding at Cana. In that overflowing joy that Jesus brings, when he feeds hungry people, when he multiplies the loaves… he presents himself as that bread of life and a Jesus who gives light when there is darkness; when he heals the man blind from birth; and a Jesus who asks for resurrection when he resurrects his friend Lazarus. Well, it is in that Easter atmosphere that this presence of Jesus occurs in the midst of those spouses, through the intersection of a loving mother, a caring mother who is going to snatch Graces from her Son and Lord, so that the love of God may be manifested. And that is not why the evangelist discards the figure of the mother. Quite the opposite. The evangelist John places Mary, from the beginning of his gospel, at those weddings until the moment on the Cross, accompanying her son. María has a relevant role. Mary accelerates the hour of God, she lovingly snatches from Jesus that hour of the Father, where he will manifest himself for those new spouses. That is why it is also important that Christian couples today have Jesus at the center of their lives, that Jesus is the love that makes them passionate, that makes them learn projects and dreams. But prayer is very important in a Christian marriage. A Christian marriage without prayer dissects and perishes. Hence the importance of making a space, a meeting place for God, as the Most Holy Mary had. May the Lord encourage us to have a clear idea of how to also involve the family, which is being formed with Jesus, as a solid foundation in that marriage. How to involve children and grandchildren in these paths of service.

I want to highlight an important event, beautiful for our archdiocesan Church. Last Saturday four deacons were ordained in our Shrine of Charity. And within those four, is a brother from my parish. Deacon René Blanco has been ordained. Together with his wife Marilyn, they are also committed as a Church, as a family, bearing witness to the love of God and how we must be able to strengthen that married life, in that alliance also with the children, in alliance with the friends, with the neighbors. May that Christian being and that marriage that is established in God never perish and may it also awaken to serve others.

(SINGING)

Let us pray for married couples, so that they may be faithful to the marital alliance. Let us pray for our people to be faithful to God… So that God grants health and peace, work and joy to married couples… So that, supported by divine strength, they make their house a welcoming, serene and joyful home… So that by living intimacy of your home, do not be insensitive to the need and pain of the great human family… So that in joy and sadness, in serenity and anguish, in illness and death, God may be your support and your hope.

(SINGING)

So that God makes them responsible parents and know how to be the first educators of the faith of their children… So that they collaborate together in the building of a better and more just world… So that your faith increases, your hope expands and your love grows… So that in moments of trial you renew your faith in the sacrament that you have received today and request God’s help to overcome all temptation… So that marriage may be a source of spiritual and human wealth… So that, overcoming all selfishness, they may seek the good of one another… So that married couples form a working community in human society and are a living cell of apostolate in the Holy Church of God… So that their mutual love is a living testimony of the love of Christ for his Church… So that they don’t feel alone… So that they never lack work… So that young spouses always have a dignified life, that they are respected by the entire society… So that they consecrate their family, their life to the education of their children in love and service to men …So that throughout their lives they never lack joy, the wine of hope and the support of their children.

(SINGING)

So that the worries and problems of life never separate marriage from God… So that they never forget their responsibility as husbands, Christian parents… So that there is never a lack of bread on the family table… So that there is never a lack of consolation and love in tribulation… So that the care of each day does not separate them from the love of God, from service to their neighbor… So that married couples Always thirst and hunger for justice, may they collaborate in the spread of the kingdom of Christ… So that all married couples try to understand each other in times of difficulty and know how to forgive and forgive each other.

(SINGING)

Listen, Father of goodness, to these prayers and grant to all couples who trust in you, obtain the gifts of your grace, preserve love in unity and reach with their descendants, after this life, the eternal Kingdom. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

(SINGING)

In this new year that has begun, as a Church that walks in Synod, we pause to be filled with joy and happiness together with deacons Dayán Rivero del Valle and Diosvany Yera Suárez, who will be ordained priests by the laying on of hands of our archbishop, Cardinal Juan García Rodríguez, in our Cathedral, next January 21 at ten in the morning. We also invite, next January 25, at five in the afternoon, in our Cathedral of Havana, to celebrate together with our pastor, Cardinal Juan, his 50 years of priestly ordination. As a Church we give thanks and keep him in our prayers to ask for his love, his dedication and perseverance in our Church.

(SINGING)

On this Sunday, the Lord’s Day, we are going to ask God for a blessing to strengthen married life, to strengthen our sense of belonging to the Church, to fill us with his Holy Spirit. We bow our heads as a gesture of humility and that God, who was present in Cana, will be present in our entire life… to carry it, to live it, to share it with our Mother, the Virgin. The Lord be with you, and with your Spirit… And the blessing of the merciful God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, descend upon you and remain forever. Amen.

(Singing)

Today, January 16, the second Sunday of ordinary liturgical time, we hear in all Catholic churches the Gospel according
