Today, in all the Catholic Churches of the world we hear the gospel according to Saint Luke chapter 3 verses 15 and following.
(GOSPEL)
Jesus was baptized by John, the baptist, in the middle of a crowd that was next to Jesus to also be baptized. John’s baptism was celebrated for conversion to a better life and forgiveness of sins. The baptism of Christ is a manifestation of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit is present in the form of a dove and God the Father speaks: “You are my son, the beloved, the chosen, the favorite”; and the son is baptized.” Our baptism is like this. The Holy Spirit is present through the water poured on our head and our sins are forgiven, we receive the life of children of God, who also affirms that we are his children, and we decide with this grace and blessing of baptism, to live like Christ, serve like Christ, forgive like Christ, crucify ourselves out of love for our neighbor like Christ and then rise like Him and go to the house of God the Father, who belongs to us by right because we are his children. Just as the date of our birth is on the identity card, it is pleasant to have the record of our baptism in the living room of the house, where the names of our parents, grandparents, godparents and the date of the baptism and the priest or deacon who baptized us. It is also nice to celebrate the day of our baptism. Send us the date of your baptism and we will send you congratulations on that great day when we begin to be children of God.
(SINGING)
Saint Thomas Aquinas tells us: “The sacraments of the Church are distinguished into the sacraments of Christian initiation, baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist. Sacraments of healing, penance and anointing of the sick, and sacraments at the service of communion and mission; priestly order and marriage. “All of them correspond to important moments of the Christian life and are ordered to the Eucharist as to its specific end.”
What does the Catechism of the Catholic Church say about baptism? How is Christian initiation carried out? Christian initiation is carried out through the sacraments that lay the foundations of Christian life. The faithful reborn in baptism are strengthened by confirmation and nourished by the Eucharist.
By what name are the first names of the initiation known? The first sacrament of initiation is, above all, called baptism, due to the central rite with which it is celebrated. To baptize means to immerse in water. Whoever receives baptism is immersed in the death of Christ and is resurrected with Him as a new creature. It is also called a bath of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit and illumination, because the baptized becomes a child of light. Since when and to whom has the Church administered baptism? Since the day of Pentecost, the Church administers baptism to those who believe in Jesus Christ. What does the essential rite of baptism consist of? The essential rite of baptism consists of immersing the candidate in water or pouring water on his head, while invoking the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Who can receive baptism? Anyone who is not baptized can receive baptism. Why does the Church baptize children? The Church baptizes children since, being born with original sin, they need to be freed from evil power and transferred to the kingdom of freedom of the children of God. What is required to be baptized? Everyone who is going to be baptized is required to make a profession of faith, expressed personally in the case of adults or through their parents and the Church in the case of children. The godfather or godmother and the entire ecclesial community also have a share of responsibility in the preparation for baptism, as well as in the development of faith and baptismal grace. Who can baptize? The ordinary ministers of baptism are the bishop, the presbyter and also the deacon. If necessary, anyone can baptize, as long as they intend to do what the Church does. He pours water on the candidate’s head and pronounces the Trinitarian baptismal formula: “I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Amen.
(SINGING)
What happened on the day of our baptism? The priest or deacon received our parents who were carrying us and our godparents. There was a dialogue.
What do they ask of the Church?
The baptism.
Do you know that you are obliged to educate the child who is baptized today in the faith and the godparents must help the parents in this educational mission?
Afterwards we listened to the Word of God and the priest or deacon explained to us the fragment read from the Bible. Afterwards there were prayers for the boy or girl, for their parents, godparents and relatives, and the saints were invoked, especially the saint whose names the baptized bear. Then the water was blessed. Next, we renounce evil. The priest or deacon asked and the relatives of the baptized person answered.
They give up denying God, insulting Him, being ungrateful to Him.
Yes, I resign.
They renounce contempt for elders, abortion, sexual debauchery, theft, slander, gossip, adultery and envy.
Yes, I resign.
They believe in God the Almighty Father, creator of heaven, earth, and the wonderful human family.
Yes I believe.
They believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God from eternity and who became man in the virginal womb of Mary, was born poor in the cave of Bethlehem, went about doing good, forgave sinners, healed the sick, died on the cross to forgiveness of sins, resurrected and lives forever with God the Father.
Yes I believe.
They believe in the Holy Spirit who is God and the third person of the Holy Trinity, capable of achieving the beautiful dreams they have with these children.
Yes I believe.
They believe that the Virgin of Charity is the mother of Christ and of all Cubans.
Yes I believe.
They believe in one baptism, in the forgiveness of sins, in the resurrection of the dead and in eternal life.
Yes I believe.
Then they poured the water on our heads saying:
I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Next, they anointed us with chrism oil so that we could live as priests, that is, give our lives to God; as prophets, which is speaking instead of God; as kings, which is to establish the kingdom of love. Then they placed a white garment on us, a sign of Christian virtues, and invited us to preserve these virtues until eternal life. And then, our parents lit a candle from the so-called Paschal Candle, a sign of the light of the risen Christ, and asked us to always walk as children of light. As children of God, our relatives prayed on our behalf, if we were children, the Lord’s Prayer.
(SINGING)
They also took us before the Virgin, they presented us before her so that we could listen to her: “Do what Jesus tells you.”
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among all women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
And the baptism ceremony concluded with God’s blessing.
(SINGING)
Since ancient times, Tertullian has told us about baptism. “Water always accompanies Christ. He also becomes baptized in water. Invited to weddings, it is with water that he inaugurates the first test of his power to work miracles. While preaching he invites the thirsty to drink his water of eternity. When he talks about Charity, he points out a work of love: ‘just giving a glass of water to one of your peers’. He takes a little rest next to a well, walks on the water, likes to go from one part of the lake to another, and serves the water to his disciples. Even in passion one can find testimonies in favor of baptism. When he is condemned to crucifixion, water also appears, this time by the hands of Pilate. When he is pierced, water comes out of his side and the soldier’s spear does nothing else.”
(SINGING)
How wonderful that a blessed family fruit has received the blessing of baptism, by which we are children of God the Father! How wonderful that this baptized creature feels protected by Father God, who never leaves us abandoned! How wonderful to teach the way of Jesus Christ, by which no one has ever been lost, whom the mother has carried into the womb! How wonderful to be able to read the Holy Scripture together, as a family, comment on the biblical text, live it and teach it! How wonderful to make our house a place of love, family harmony, a palace of peace, where everyone wants to return early! How wonderful to thank God for the people who make up our families and for our godparents! How wonderful to be all baptized, children of God, brothers of all! How wonderful to live as sons and daughters of the Virgin Mary of Charity!
(SINGING)
This Sunday night begins the annual retreat of our priests. Time for prayer, reflection, time for meditation. We pray for them.
Father God, who you thought and created to be priests, want to talk to you and listen to you and come out with shining faces.
Lord Jesus Christ, those who you chose to be with you, want to talk to you, tell you about their dreams, hopes and difficulties. Listen to them and tell them what you want.
Holy Spirit, those of you who anointed priests long to renew the anointing and passionately give themselves to the Kingdom without tiring. Strengthen them.
Saint Mary of Charity, pray for your children so that in these days there are new wineskins for the always new wine of your Son.
Saint Ignatius of Loyola accompanies your disciple Father Javier Vidal and may leave a growing holiness in the retreatants. Amen.
And the blessing of God the Father, who created us to constitute a beautiful family; the blessing of Jesus Christ, a path by which no one has ever been lost; May the blessing of the Holy Spirit, who is a comfort to our sick and to all who suffer, descend upon you and remain forever. Amen.

Today, January 9, the Sunday following the Solemnity of Epiphany, that is, the manifestation of the baby Jesus to
