Homily of S.E.R. Cardinal Juan de la Caridad García on the Solemnity of San Cristóbal de La Habana

We thank God for our ancestors who asked Saint Christopher to protect Havana and promised to imitate the heroic virtues of Saint Christopher.

He knew Christ and realized that with Christ he could overcome his evils, his personal sins, family, ecclesiastical and social sins and he followed Christ, the path by which no one has ever been lost, the truth that fills us with hope. , the fully happy life, here and now and later in eternal life.

Saint Christopher lived at the service of others and with the strength and stature that God had given him, he offered to cross the river on his shoulders for those who could not do so.

And one day he realized that Christ was over his men. He had not realized that everyone he carried was Christ himself. He had to read chapter 25 of Saint Matthew, verses 31 to 45, an evangelical text that we will hear next Sunday in all the Catholic churches of the world.

Saint Christopher, you who carry all the people of Havana in their joys and sorrows, work and sufferings in their doubts of faith, in their uncertainties, teach us to carry our family members, neighbors, friends who need to be lifted up, carried, encouraged.

Saint Christopher, you who carry the nuns to those who are in nursing homes, tell us what to do to help these nuns and the brothers of Saint John of God to make them happy and those who themselves feed, give water, They bathe them, dress them and make them happy with their love.

Saint Christopher, you who one day met Christ and by following him were very happy on this earth, help us to present Christ to our children who do not know him, to our grandchildren who cannot imagine the happiness of catechism.

Saint Christopher, give us the light to carry and console so many who suffer since they do not know that God loves them.

Saint Christopher, continue leading all Havana residents to the shore of faith, hope and charity and then present us to God the Father with the voluminous load of works of corporal and spiritual mercies.

Thus we will be very happy in Havana and later with the Havana native José Olallo Valdés and Jaime Oscar in the house where The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit, the Virgin of Charity and our deceased await us.
